Be-Your-Own-Damn-Fitspo!

My Story

Like many fitness coaches before me, I’ve had my own personal struggles with weight loss and my relationship with food. Growing up, I hated sport, didn’t enjoy exercise, and felt guilty every time I ate chocolate or takeaways.

I tried so many times to enjoy running. Not because it looked like a fun sport, but because someone once told me it burned the most calories. And that’s such a shitty reason to workout.

It took me a long time to realize that you’re never going to stick to something you don’t love.

After I randomly tried a CrossFit class one day, I completely fell in love. Fell in love with getting stronger, with doing things I never thought possible, fell in love with the feeling that I was in control of my body, my health, and my life for the first time in a long, long time.

And I’ve learned the same when it comes to nutrition. You’re not going to stick to something you don’t love. If you have to cut out foods you love, it’s just not going to work for you.

So often, we see things that work for other people and think we have to do the same thing to lose weight. We see some #fitspo model who gave up dairy, so think we’ll get the same body if we follow the same diet.

Or we see a different #fitspo influencer doing high-rep, low-weight cardio circuits and wonder if we could look like her if we do the same.

We feel so hopeless and broken that we can never get the same results we see on Instagram.

But we’re comparing ourselves to people whose whole lives revolve around fitness.

Who have the luxury of sleeping in every morning, who can rock up to the gym at 10 am for a nice leisurely session without work stress or childcare worries in the back of their minds. People who are sponsored by supplement companies, who receive free protein powder, who have meal prep companies sending them free nutritional meals every week.

And here we are, struggling with a demanding job, juggling family, friends, and work obligations, not getting enough sleep, and still beating ourselves up because we’re not spending two hours in the gym every day and making insta-worthy food prep meals.

Well, screw that.

It’s time to #BeYourOwnDamnFitspo

It’s time to learn how to make a healthy lifestyle work for you. Find exercise you love. Learn how to make nutrition work for you – without giving up those foods you love. Inspire your friends and family in a way #fitspo models never could.
